The Garcia family, known for their passion for art and design, wanted their pool to reflect their love for creativity and aesthetics. 

Their vision was to transform their backyard into a unique and visually stunning space by incorporating a custom mosaic design into their swimming pool. This case study explores the challenges and processes involved in creating the Garcia family’s artistic mosaic pool.

They envisioned a pool that was not just a place to swim, but a piece of art that would be the centerpiece of their outdoor space. The family wanted a custom-designed mosaic that depicted an ocean scene, complete with vibrant fish, coral reefs, and flowing water patterns.

The design phase began with the Garcias collaborating with a mosaic artist and a pool contractor who specialized in custom designs. The artist worked closely with the family to understand their vision and create a detailed sketch of the mosaic.

Pool Specifications

Shape and Size: The pool was designed in a freeform shape, measuring approximately 35 feet by 25 feet, to provide a natural and organic feel that complemented the mosaic design.

Materials: High-quality glass tiles were chosen for the mosaic due to their durability, vibrant colors, and ability to reflect light beautifully. The pool’s interior finish was selected to be a neutral color to ensure the mosaic stood out.

Features: In addition to the mosaic, the pool included underwater LED lighting to highlight the artwork, a waterfall feature to enhance the ambiance, and built-in seating areas to allow for relaxed viewing of the mosaic.

Construction Process

Site Preparation: The backyard was cleared, and the site was leveled to prepare for the pool’s construction. Utility lines were laid out to support the pool’s features, including lighting and the waterfall.

Excavation and Shell Construction: The pool area was excavated according to the freeform design. A reinforced concrete shell was constructed, providing a sturdy foundation for the mosaic tiles.

Mosaic Installation:

   -Design Transfer: The artist transferred the mosaic design onto the pool’s floor and walls using a grid system. This ensured the artwork was accurately reproduced in the pool.

   – Tile Placement: Each glass tile was meticulously placed by hand, following the artist’s design. This process was time-consuming, requiring attention to detail to ensure the colors and patterns flowed seamlessly.

   – Grouting and Sealing: Once the tiles were placed, the mosaic was grouted to secure the tiles and create a smooth surface. A high-quality sealant was applied to protect the tiles from water and chemicals.

Finishing Touches: The pool’s interior was finished with a smooth plaster to complement the mosaic. Underwater LED lights were installed to illuminate the mosaic at night, creating a stunning visual effect. The waterfall feature was added to enhance the pool’s ambiance, and built-in seating areas were constructed to provide comfortable viewing spots.

One of the main challenges was ensuring the durability of the mosaic in a pool setting. To address this, high-quality glass tiles and sealants were used to withstand the pool’s environment.

Construction Process

1. Site Preparation: The backyard was cleared and leveled to prepare for construction. Utilities for water, electricity, and gas were laid out to support the pool’s features.
2. Excavation and Shell Construction: The pool area was excavated according to the design. A reinforced concrete shell was constructed to provide a strong and durable foundation.
3. Feature Installation:

   – Swim-Up Bar: The bar area was constructed with submerged stools and a countertop made of natural stone. Plumbing for a sink and space for a mini-fridge were included.

   – Underwater Seating: Benches were integrated along the pool’s edges, providing comfortable seating areas within the water.

   – Outdoor Kitchen: The kitchen was built adjacent to the pool with high-quality stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a built-in grill.

   – Lounge Area: The lounge area was designed with durable, weather-resistant furniture. Pergolas and umbrellas were installed to provide shade and create a cozy atmosphere.

4. Finishing Touches: The pool’s interior was finished with smooth tiles that complemented the natural stone. High-efficiency LED lighting was installed both in the pool and around the entertainment areas to create a warm and inviting ambiance at night. The surrounding landscape was enhanced with plants and decorative elements to complete the resort-like feel.
